Food banks are a lifeline, but not the solution.

6.5 million people used at least one type of charitable food provision in 2024. And there are concerning signs that the levels of hardship people are facing are deepening - more people are saying they are going without or cutting back on food because they can’t afford it.

Food banks provide a lifeline for so many people facing hardship, but they shouldn’t have to exist in a just and compassionate society. And they weren’t set up to respond to this level of need – they’re stretched to breaking point trying to help increasing numbers of people on the lowest incomes.
